FRANKFORT, Ky., (KBSI) — Kentucky residents affected by the May 16-17 tornadoes in Caldwell, Laurel, Pulaski, Russell, Trigg and Union counties have until Aug. 22 to apply for federal disaster assistance.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urges homeowners and renters to file insurance claims for damage to their properties before applying for assistance. FEMA Individual Assistance cannot duplicate insurance benefits or other sources of assistance.

When applying, provide:

Current phone number
Address at time of disaster and current address
Social Security Number
List of damage and losses
Banking information (for direct deposit)
Insurance policy number or agent/company name (if applicable)

Survivors should keep their contact information updated with FEMA to facilitate communication regarding home inspections or additional information.
