Body found in Big Muddy River near Desoto; investigation ongoing

DESOTO, Ill., (KBSI) — Authorities are investigating the discovery of a body in the Big Muddy River near Desoto early Friday.

Fishermen found the body around midnight, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and the Jackson County Coroner responded to the call where the person was announced deceased at the scene. Jackson County investigators believe they have identified the body and have notified family, but steps to determine definite identification are being taken before they release the identity.

Local fishermen say the Big Muddy River also known as the Missouri River is a great place to fish or boat but with it being the longest river in the United States it can be dangerous due to its size and strong currents.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine cause of death.

There is currently no evidence of foul play, but the investigation remains active. Additional information will be released once a positive identification is made.
