Kentucky bans ‘Designer Xanax’ after string of fatal overdoses
FRANKFORT, Ky., (KBSI) — Gov. Andy Beshear has issued an emergency regulation designating bromazolam, also known as “designer Xanax,” as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, effectively banning its sale in Kentucky.
The move comes after the drug was linked to 48 overdose deaths in the state last year. Law enforcement can now make arrests for sales or possession of the substance.
“Team Kentucky has made progress in our fight against addiction, with three-straight years of declines in overdose deaths,” Beshear said. “This deadly drug has no place in our communities.”
Kentucky joins several other states in designating bromazolam as a Schedule 1 controlled substance. The state has also implemented various initiatives to combat addiction, including a treatment access program and a recovery ready certification for communities.
