Poplar Bluff woman urges preventative care after colonoscopy reveals precancerous polyps at age 23

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo., (KBSI) — At just 23 years old, Courtney McGee of Poplar Bluff went in for a colonoscopy expecting routine results. Instead, doctors found precancerous polyps — a discovery she says changed how she views her health and the importance of preventative care.
McGee first sought medical attention in November 2024 after experiencing persistent abdominal pain and bloating. She met with Kristin Shelton, P.A., at Regional Physician Services – Gastroenterology, who referred her for a diagnostic colonoscopy within the same week.
“The entire process went smoothly,” McGee said, crediting nurses for making her feel informed and comfortable throughout the procedure. She also consulted with gastroenterologist Dr. Victor Lawrinenko before the exam.
The results, however, were a shock. “I thought I was too young to have polyps and figured it was just something in my diet that needed to change,” McGee said. “It was a relief to know it was caught early but hearing it could have been more serious if left undetected was a real wake-up call.”
Since the procedure, McGee said she has made significant lifestyle changes, focusing on nutrition and long-term health. She has begun meal prepping, prioritized high-fiber foods and thinking more critically about her diet.
“If you feed your body junk, you’re going to feel like junk,” she said. “Every bite I take is now heavily considered, and I’m mindful knowing everything I eat, or drink will affect my health in one way or another.”
Her message to others: don’t delay care. “Don’t let embarrassment or pride keep you from talking to your doctor,” McGee said. “Preventative care can truly change your life.”
Medical experts recommend adults 45 and older undergo colonoscopy screenings, but physicians say anyone with concerning symptoms should consult their provider regardless of age.
Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, where McGee received care, is launching a new email series on Sept. 15 called Enjoy the Ride: Navigating a Longer, Healthier Life, focused on lifestyle changes that support longevity.
