CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Officers and participants gathered at the Southern Illinois University Banterra Center on Thursday morning for the annual 9/11 Saluki Stair Climb, honoring the victims and first responders of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Participants challenged themselves to climb 110 flights of stairs, symbolizing the 110 floors of the World Trade Center towers.

This year’s event featured an increased number of steps to more accurately reflect the towers’ height.

Organizers said the event serves as both a physical challenge and a tribute to the sacrifice and resilience shown on 9/11.
