Murphysboro Barbecue Cook-Off returns in September

MURPHYSBORO, Ill., (KBSI) — The countdown is on for the 2025 Praise the Lard Murphysboro Barbecue Cook-Off, scheduled for September.

Now in its 38th year, the cook-off is one of the oldest and most respected barbecue competitions in the nation. The event is tri-sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, Memphis Barbecue Network, and the Steak Cookoff Association.

Organizers say limited spots remain open for competitors, judges and business sponsors. Applications are available at 17bbq.com/cook-off.

This year’s event also coincides with the 40th anniversary of 17th Street Barbecue, adding to the celebration.

Whether a seasoned competitor or a first-time visitor, participants and spectators alike are invited to Murphysboro in September to take part in the festivities.
