BBB warns consumers about Mattoon firearms retailer Defense Depot

ST. LOUIS, Mo., (KBSI) — The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to use caution when purchasing from Defense Depot, a firearms and accessories retailer based in Mattoon, Illinois, after receiving multiple complaints of undelivered items, missing refunds and poor customer service.
BBB said Defense Depot currently holds an “F” rating — the lowest on its scale — due to a pattern of unanswered complaints and negative customer reviews. While the company operates a storefront in Mattoon, all complaints reported to BBB involved online transactions.
Among the reports:
A Berwyn, Nebraska, man said he paid $1,864 for a scope in May and has received no updates.
A Whiteville, North Carolina, customer said he paid $396 for a pistol, was promised a refund in June, but has not received it.
A Melbourne, Florida, man said he paid $500 for a firearm, was told there was a warehouse error and has not heard back.
According to Illinois Secretary of State records, the business is registered as Illinois Outdoor Sports, LLC, with Matthew David Harden and Ryan Cline Fultz listed as managers. Defense Depot is currently building a new facility at 2885 East County Road 800N in Mattoon.
Despite repeated attempts, BBB said Defense Depot has not responded to inquiries. A BBB investigator also tried to contact Fultz directly without success. The local Chamber of Commerce reported that it had received complaints from customers and was told by the business that computer issues were causing delays in filling orders.
BBB urged consumers to research businesses before making purchases, be cautious of deals that appear too good to be true, review refund policies, use credit cards for added protections, and verify website security.
Consumers experiencing issues with Defense Depot or similar companies are encouraged to file a complaint at BBB: The Sign of a Better Business | Better Business Bureau and contact their state attorney general’s office.
