Carbondale man killed in single-vehicle crash

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — A Carbondale man died early Thursday after his vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree and caught fire, police said.

Officers responded at 1:56 a.m. to the intersection of East Pleasant Hill Road and South Wall Street. Investigators said a vehicle traveling south on South Wall Street failed to stop at the intersection, veered off the roadway and hit a tree. The vehicle sustained extensive damage and caught fire.

The driver, Daryl L. Norwood, 38, of Carbondale, was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

The Carbondale Police Department is continuing to investigate with assistance from the Carbondale Fire Department, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, the Southern Illinois University Department of Public Safety and the Illinois State Police.
