Contour Airlines to maintain service at Barkley Regional Airport despite federal funding lapse
FOX23 News at 9 p.m.
WEST PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) — Barkley Regional Airport officials say Contour Airlines will continue operating flights despite a potential lapse in federal funding for the Essential Air Service (EAS) program caused by the ongoing federal government shutdown.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), if the shutdown continues beyond Oct. 12, the agency will be unable to provide subsidy payments to airlines operating under EAS contracts. Beginning Oct. 13, participating carriers would be released from their service obligations until funding is restored.
Contour Airlines, which currently provides EAS flights at Barkley Regional Airport, announced it will maintain its full flight schedule in the interim.
“Contour Airlines recognizes the vital nature of the air service we have been entrusted to provide to rural America,” said Matt Chaifetz, CEO of Contour Airlines. “Accordingly, Contour will continue to operate its full flight schedule during the federal government shutdown. Continued federal funding for EAS is necessary to sustain this service over the long term. We remain hopeful that leaders will reach a resolution soon to ensure that critical programs like EAS continue without interruption.”
Barkley Regional Airport Executive Director Dennis Rouleau thanked the airline for its commitment to the region and underscored the importance of continued federal support.
“We sincerely acknowledge Matt Chaifetz’s dedication to the EAS program, Barkley Regional Airport, and the Purchase region it serves during this challenging period,” Rouleau said. “Ensuring continued access to the national air transportation system remains vital for our region, and we look forward to the prompt restoration of federal funding.”
Airport officials said they are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates to the public as developments occur. Barkley Regional Airport remains committed to maintaining safe and reliable air service for western Kentucky residents and will continue working with Contour Airlines, the DOT, and local partners throughout the funding lapse.
