Lyon County sheriff warns drivers as dense fog returns

EDDYVILLE, Ky., (KBSI) – The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers to use caution as dense fog is expected to form again overnight and into the Tuesday morning commute.

Deputies advised motorists to allow extra travel time and follow key safety practices when visibility is reduced. The sheriff’s office offered the following tips for driving in fog:

  • Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
  • Use seat belts, windshield wipers and window defrosters.
  • Turn on headlamps manually and keep them on low beam.
  • Do not rely on the lights of vehicles in front; keep a safe following distance.
  • Avoid using cruise control.
  • Follow the right-hand fog line where striping is present.
  • If another vehicle tailgates, maintain a safe speed and do not accelerate.
  • Delay travel if fog becomes too dense and visibility is severely limited.
  • Before making turns, check mirrors, turn off the radio, roll down the window and listen for approaching traffic.
  • If travel becomes unsafe — particularly at intersections — pull as far off the roadway as possible and wait for conditions to improve.

The sheriff’s office reminded residents that slowing down and staying alert can help prevent crashes in low-visibility conditions.
