Mercy Southeast introduces FibroScan Technology for faster liver disease detection

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Mercy Southeast is now offering FibroScan, a non-invasive diagnostic tool for detecting liver disease, becoming the first health provider in southeast Missouri to make the technology available.

Mercy Clinic Gastroenterology – Broadway has implemented FibroScan as an alternative to traditional liver biopsies. Using ultrasound-based technology, FibroScan measures liver stiffness and fat buildup to help detect conditions that may affect liver function. The test is painless and typically takes between 5 and 15 minutes.

“Bringing FibroScan technology to our community is a game changer for liver health,” said Dr. Brent Keller, Mercy Southeast gastroenterologist. “It allows us to detect liver issues much earlier, prevent advanced disease, and deliver high-quality care close to home. In just a few minutes, we can assess a patient’s liver condition and begin making a treatment or monitoring plan the same day.”

FibroScan may be recommended for patients with risk factors or signs of liver disease, including:

• Alcohol-related liver disease
• Fatty liver disease linked to obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure
• Hepatitis

Mercy Gastroenterology – Broadway is also launching a fatty liver clinic to provide specialized care, track patient progress and coordinate long-term management.

“We want to help patients understand their diagnosis, stay organized with their care, and take practical steps to improve their liver health,” said Hannah Robinson, coordinator of the clinic. “Our goal is to offer reassurance, clear answers and ongoing support.”
