One person killed, four injured in four-vehicle crash near Scott City

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — A Cape Girardeau man was killed, and four others were injured Monday evening in a four-vehicle crash on Route AB, about four miles west of Scott City, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash happened at about 5:20 p.m. when a 2022 Hyundai Elantra, driven by a 33-year-old Cape Girardeau man, crossed the center line and struck a westbound 2018 Chevrolet Equinox and a 2004 Chevrolet Express van. The impact caused the Equinox to cross the center of the roadway and collide with a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 33-year-old man from Cape Girardeau, died at the scene. He was pronounced at 5:41 p.m. by Cape Girardeau County Deputy Coroner Nick Miller. MSHP reports this is Troop E’s 60th fatality of 2025. Next of kin have been notified.

A 5-year-old Leopold girl in the Equinox suffered moderate injuries. The 45-year-old Zalma man driving the Colorado and a 57-year-old Cape Girardeau man riding in the Express van also sustained moderate injuries. The driver of the Equinox, a 33-year-old Leopold woman, suffered minor injuries.

All four vehicles were totaled in the collision. The injured were transported to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau by ambulance or private vehicle.

Both lanes of Route AB were closed for several hours as emergency crews cleared the scene. MoDOT diverted traffic at County Roads 217 and 218.

The crash was investigated by Trooper D.L. Brawley, assisted by Cpl. D.M. Wyatt and Trooper D.W. Welker.
