PERRYVILLE, Mo., (KBSI) — Two small children were killed, and two juveniles were rescued Thursday morning after a house fire in the 700 block of Bruce Street, according to local authorities.
The Perryville Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 7:15 a.m. for a report of a residential structure fire. While en route, crews were told that occupants might be trapped on the second floor.
When the first engine company arrived, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and confirmed that two children were trapped upstairs. Fire crews immediately began rescue operations, locating the juveniles and removing them from the home. They were transferred to Mercy EMS for medical care.
Despite the rescue efforts, officials later confirmed that two children died in the fire. The home sustained significant fire and water damage before the fire was brought under control.
Perryville Police Department officers were first on the scene and attempted to enter the home but were forced back by heavy smoke. Officers also tried to reach the children from outside but were unsuccessful.
“Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time,” the fire department said.
The Perryville Fire Department, Perryville Police Department and the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office are jointly investigating the cause of the fire. Additional inquiries may be directed to Assistant Chief Garrett Schott.
