CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A Cape Girardeau man has been arrested and charged following a shots-fired incident late Monday, police said.
Officers with the Cape Girardeau Police Department responded at about 9:19 p.m. Dec. 29, 2025, to the 1300 block of Amblewood Drive after receiving a report of gunfire.
Upon arrival, officers reported hearing a gunshot coming from behind a building. Police located a man later identified as Connor Oetzel, 30, of Cape Girardeau, and detained him. Several spent shell casings were found in the immediate area where Oetzel was detained.
Police said Oetzel admitted he had consumed alcohol and provided a preliminary breath sample to officers. While being transported to jail, Oetzel allegedly spit in the face of one of the transporting officers.
During the investigation, officers recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the incident. No injuries or property damage were reported.
Oetzel was formally charged through the Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office with unlawful use of a weapon, a Class E felony; unlawful discharge of a firearm, a Class A misdemeanor; and fourth-degree assault, a Class A misdemeanor. He is being held on a $10,000 cash-only bond.
Authorities emphasized that charges are accusations and that Oetzel is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
