Carbondale announces series of events honoring Martin Luther King Jr. legacy

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — City of Carbondale is inviting residents to take part in several events across Southern Illinois honoring the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The celebrations begin Sunday, Jan. 18, with the MLK Community Celebration titled “Peaceful Warriors” at the Carbondale Civic Center. The program begins at 2 p.m., with doors opening at 1 p.m.

On Monday, Jan. 19, the Carbondale NAACP will host its Martin Luther King Jr. Day Scholarship Breakfast, themed “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” at the SIU Student Center. Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by the program at 8:30 a.m. A food donation drive will also be held during the event.

Later that evening, a special screening of the film Citizen Bowen will take place at the African American Museum of Southern Illinois at 5 p.m.

Events continue Tuesday, Jan. 20, with the John A. Logan College Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Celebration, “Community, Service, Unity, Legacy,” at the John A. Logan College Conference Center from 8 to 10 a.m. Donations of food, warm clothing and books will be collected.

City officials encouraged residents to participate in the events to honor King’s legacy, engage in service opportunities and strengthen community connections.
