Homicide investigation underway after man found dead in Belle Rive

BELLE RIVE, Ill., (KBSI) — A homicide investigation is underway in Jefferson County after a man was found dead Sunday morning in a Belle Rive parking lot, authorities said.

Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were called at about 7:12 a.m. to the 21800 block of East Bonnie Road for a report of an unresponsive man. Upon arrival, deputies found the man deceased. He was later identified as James D. Cross, 47, of Dahlgren.

Detectives with the sheriff’s office, Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse and Illinois State Police crime scene technicians responded to assist with the investigation. An autopsy conducted later Sunday determined Cross died from a gunshot wound.

Detectives with the Mount Vernon Police Department also assisted at the scene. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and no additional details have been released.
