Vienna Speech Team advances six events to IHSA Sectionals

VIENNA, Ill., (KBSI) — The Vienna High School Speech Team advanced six individual events to the IHSA Sectional level following competition at Harrisburg High School, marking a milestone for the program.

Under IHSA rules, students placing fifth or higher in their events qualify for sectionals. Vienna’s sectional qualifiers are:

  • Olivia Quertermous, third place, Original Oratory
  • Mary-Kate Starrick, third place, Poetry
  • Abelina Allen, fourth place, Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Kyran Thorne, fourth place, Informative Speaking
  • Sean Crabb, fourth place, Radio Speaking
  • Olivia Quertermous, fourth place, Special Occasion Speaking

Additional top finishes contributing to the team’s overall performance included:

  • Emma Charles, fifth place, Prose
  • Ben Ethridge, sixth place, Impromptu
  • Bayleigh Brewer, sixth place, Declamation
  • Mary-Kate Starrick, sixth place, Dramatic Interpretation
  • Bailey Griffin, seventh place, Humorous Interpretation
  • Braedon Miller, seventh place, Oratorical Commentary
  • Kyran Thorne and Ben Ethridge, seventh place, Duet Acting

Vienna High School placed fifth overall in team sweepstakes.

The qualifiers in Original Oratory, Poetry, Extemporaneous Speaking, Informative Speaking and Radio Speaking are the first in school history to advance to IHSA Sectionals in those events.

The Vienna Speech Team will compete at the IHSA Sectional Tournament in Normal on Saturday, Feb. 14.
