CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale is hosting a citywide food drive throughout February to support local food pantries and soup kitchens, officials announced.

The “Share the Love, City-Wide Food Drive” runs from Feb. 9 through Feb. 28 and benefits The Good Samaritan House Food Pantry, Bethel AME Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen and the SIU Food Pantry.

Residents are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items at the following locations:

  • Carbondale Civic Center, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Carbondale Police Department, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Carbondale Fire Department Stations 1 and 2, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Walmart, daily, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Kroger, daily, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Mayor Harvey said the food drive was intentionally scheduled outside the traditional holiday season to help address year-round hunger.

“During November and December, there are always food drives around the holidays, but people are hungry year-round,” Harvey said. “With Valentine’s coming up, we think of February as the month of love, and this is a great way to show love for your fellow citizens here in Carbondale.”
