MURPHYSBORO, Ill., (KBSI) — The Jackson County Health Department has announced dates for its 2026 Shred/Med/Sharps & More events.

The events are scheduled for Saturday, April 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26, from 8 a.m. to noon at the health department, 415 Health Department Road in Murphysboro. The events will be held rain or shine.

Residents may dispose of unused prescription and over-the-counter medications, including pills, creams and patches. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office will be on site to ensure safe collection and disposal. Officials said proper medication disposal helps reduce misuse and environmental hazards.

Participants may also drop off confidential documents for secure off-site shredding by START. There is a limit of two boxes per participant. Paper clips and staples are accepted, but binders, binder clips, magazines and junk mail will not be accepted.

The event will also collect CFL and LED light bulbs and household batteries, including alkaline batteries. A medical sharps disposal kiosk will be available, and free sharps collection containers will be provided upon request.

In addition, organizers will host a “Nourish Your Neighbor” food drive to collect nonperishable healthy food items to help address food insecurity in Jackson County.

Residents must register in advance by visiting jchdonline.org or calling 618-684-3143, ext. 128, to schedule a drop-off time.
