CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — A late-night fire at a duplex in Carbondale displaced residents but caused no injuries, according to the fire department.
Crews responded around 10:15 p.m. March 31 to a reported structure fire on Iowa Road. Upon arrival, firefighters found flames on the exterior of a single-story duplex and in the attic.
Officials said occupants of the affected unit had already evacuated, and crews assisted in evacuating residents from the neighboring unit.
One resident attempted to put out the fire with a portable extinguisher before crews arrived, but the effort was unsuccessful.
Firefighters brought the fire under control and extinguished it. Investigators later determined there was no foul play.
Both units were left uninhabitable, and residents have been relocated.
The Carbondale Fire Department was assisted by the Carbondale Police Department, Murphysboro Fire Department and Jackson County Ambulance Service.
Officials reminded residents that fire extinguishers can be useful for small fires but should only be used if the fire is contained and an exit is clear.
