KSP investigating officer-involved shooting in Crittenden County

STURGIS, Ky., (KBSI) — Kentucky State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead and a deputy critically injured.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. April 2 at a home on KY-365 in Sturgis. Officers with the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky Department of Community Based Services were serving emergency guardianship paperwork when gunfire was exchanged with a suspect, according to KSP.

Authorities said the suspect, identified as 60-year-old Ronnie Phillips, was fatally shot during the incident.

Deputy Rick Coyle was struck by gunfire and airlifted to Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where he remains in critical condition.

A woman inside the home was safely removed, and no other injuries were reported.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including several sheriff’s offices, Marion Police Department, Crittenden County EMS and the county coroner’s office.

The investigation remains ongoing.
