SCOTT COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — A Benton man has been charged in connection with an arson and burglary investigation, according to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded April 4 to a report of a burglary and discovered a residence fully engulfed in flames. Witnesses reported seeing a man, later identified as Cole Michael Hutson-Vinson, 27, running from the scene and attempting to ignite nearby hay bales using gasoline.

At the same time, deputies were called to a nearby home where a burglary was reported. Investigators said the residence showed signs of forced entry, damage and stolen property.

Authorities said Hutson-Vinson was located nearby after a brief search. He fled on foot and attempted to hide before being taken into custody.

Investigators also determined a gas can used in the incident had been stolen from another property.

Hutson-Vinson is charged with second-degree arson, second-degree burglary, felony resisting arrest, property damage and stealing $750 or more. Bond was set at $75,000.

The charges are allegations, and Hutson-Vinson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
