Weakley County arts programs help students manage stress and support learning

WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tnn., (KBSI) — Arts programs in schools can play a critical role in helping students manage stress and improve learning, according to educator Betsi Foster.

Foster said many students arrive at school already overwhelmed by stress, distractions and personal challenges, making it difficult to absorb new information. She described this as “cognitive load,” or the amount of mental strain students carry throughout the day.

She said creative outlets such as visual art, music, dance and theater allow students to express emotions and reduce that burden, helping them refocus and better engage in the classroom.

Foster pointed to techniques like “anxiety writing,” where students briefly write about their feelings before a test, as evidence that expression can improve performance by easing stress.

She said providing opportunities for students to create and express themselves is essential as schools work to support both academic success and student well-being.
