1 dead after house fire with explosions in Zeigler, officials say

ZEIGLER, Ill., (KBSI) — One person is dead following a house fire early Thursday morning in Zeigler, according to local officials.

Fire crews were called to a home on Pine Street just after 5 a.m. for reports of a fire with explosions, Zeigler Fire Chief Ron Diuguid said. When crews arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames, and additional agencies were requested.

Officials said one resident and a firefighter were treated for injuries.

The home was destroyed, and two neighboring houses sustained damage.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Franklin County Coroner’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.

A neighbor said a loud explosion woke him, prompting him to call 911. He also reported assisting one person to an ambulance.

Multiple fire departments responded, including crews from Benton, Christopher, Herrin, Royalton, West Frankfort, Williamson County and Buckner. The American Red Cross was also on scene.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information has not yet been released.
