Carbondale reminds residents to keep grass under 8 inches as enforcement begins

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — City officials are reminding property owners and residents to maintain their lawns as the growing season begins.
Under city code, grass, weeds and similar vegetation must be kept below 8 inches in height. Officials said proper maintenance helps prevent pests, improve neighborhood appearance and protect public health and safety.
The requirement does not apply to land zoned for forestry or agriculture, provided a 20-foot perimeter along any public right-of-way is mowed. Property owners and tenants are also responsible for maintaining adjacent rights-of-way.
The city’s Building and Neighborhood Services department will begin monitoring and enforcing the ordinance the week of April 26.
Officials said two violations within the same growing season will result in citations issued to property owners and occupants. Additional violations will also lead to citations.
If properties are not brought into compliance within seven days of notice, the city may arrange for mowing services at the owner’s expense.
