SPRINGFIELD, Ill., (KBSI) — The American Red Cross is recognizing its volunteers during National Volunteer Week, observed April 19-25, and highlighting their role in supporting communities across Illinois.
Officials said volunteers make up about 90% of the Red Cross workforce, assisting with disaster response, blood drives, support for military families and other services. Nationally, more than 325,000 people volunteer with the organization.
In South and West Central Illinois, Red Cross volunteers have responded to 17 home fires so far in April, assisting 39 people affected by those incidents. Volunteers provided immediate relief, including shelter, supplies and emotional support.
The organization said there is an ongoing need for volunteers in several roles, including disaster response, shelter support and blood donation services. Free training is provided.
Officials are encouraging community members to volunteer and support Red Cross efforts.
