BBB urges caution when hiring contractors after storms

ST. LOUIS (KBSI) — The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to carefully research contractors following recent storms across Missouri and Illinois.
Officials said severe weather, including high winds, thunderstorms and hail, caused damage in parts of the region and marks the start of the spring tornado season.
The BBB said homeowners should contact their insurance providers, research companies and obtain multiple estimates before hiring contractors for repairs.
The agency also warned about reports of so-called “storm-chasing” contractors who go door to door after severe weather, offering quick repairs but failing to complete the work or disappearing after taking payment.
“Dealing with storm damage is stressful, and it’s understandable that people want repairs done quickly, but it’s important to not rush into a decision without doing research,” said Michelle L. Corey.
The BBB recommends consumers:
- Contact their insurance company before signing repair contracts
- Research businesses, including reviews and complaint history
- Be cautious of unsolicited offers or high-pressure sales tactics
- Obtain at least three estimates before selecting a contractor
Officials also advise getting written contracts, verifying licensing and insurance, and avoiding large upfront payments. Consumers should not pay in cash, sign over insurance checks or agree to work without clear documentation.
The BBB said taking these steps can help prevent fraud and ensure quality repairs after storm damage.
