MoDOT expands Sponsor-A-Highway program statewide to reduce roadside litter

MISSOURI (KBSI) – The Missouri Department of Transportation has expanded its Sponsor-A-Highway program statewide, allowing more residents and organizations to help reduce roadside litter.
Previously limited to the St. Louis and Kansas City areas, the program now offers sponsorship opportunities along most state highways. Businesses, community groups and individuals can sponsor one-mile sections through Adopt-A-Highway Litter Removal Service of America Inc., which handles litter removal and maintenance.
Officials said each sponsored section will be cleaned at least once a month. Sponsors will receive signage displaying their name and logo along the roadway.
MoDOT officials said the expansion could help offset the agency’s estimated $13 million annual cost for litter removal and allow resources to be redirected to other needs.
The agency also continues to offer other anti-litter initiatives, including its volunteer cleanup program, a statewide litter prevention campaign and an annual student contest aimed at raising awareness.
More information about the Sponsor-A-Highway program is available through the service provider or on the MoDOT website.
