Local business owner and coach lead’s cheer teams to new heights

JACKSON, Mo. (KBSI) – A local business owner and cheer coach is taking high school, college, and all-star teams straight to the top by capturing titles and gaining community support along the way.
Billy Hoskins is owner of Phantom Athletics in Jackson, a cheerleading, tumbling and training facility for all ages.
Hoskins has more than a decade of cheer training experience, and personal experience as he shares, he became interested in gymnastics when he was in the 6th grade and then cheerleading around 8th grade. Hoskins has help build the cheerleading competition program at Southeast Missouri State University, the team going to nationals in 2019 and just barely placing under first place.
Hoskins has taught cheer at many different local high schools over the last decade and currently teaches cheer at Kelly high school and will help with the cheer program at Notre Dame Regional High School. He shares some titles local districts have won over the years under his coaching.
“My very first team that won state was Meadow Heights in 06, Jackson High School again, we started their competition program back from nothing and, we got second place my last year there” says Hoskins. “Then I started with Kelly and immediately we won my first year there and then we actually won high school nationals that year as well. We’re currently going on our seventh state championship at Kelly. We’re three time back-to-back, and last year we were fifth at nationals out of about 15 teams. I also restarted that competition program at Southeast Missouri State University.”
For years locally Hoskins has taken team after team from sidelines to spotlight turning hard work into championships. He shares although taking home a win is the goal it’s not just about the trophies it’s the discipline, confidence, and belief students learn along the way.
“You know, you’re just creating good humans and that’s what you told me in the beginning. That’s all I ever want. You know, we can win all the trophies in the world perfectly fine, but when you leave me, I know that out in the real world, you’re going to be a good human. If you’ve trained under me or any one of my coaches, that is what we were creating. I don’t care where you came from. I don’t care how much money you have. I don’t care what it’s about. My mom paid with rolls of quarters for me to go to gymnastics. So good humans can be created from anything” says Hoskins.
