Ameren Illinois warns of balloon-related power outages during celebrations

ILLINOIS (KBSI) — Ameren Illinois is reminding residents to take precautions with Mylar balloons during graduation parties and spring celebrations.

Officials said metallic balloons can cause power outages if they come into contact with power lines. Since 2021, the company has responded to more than 170 outages linked to balloons.

Customers are urged to keep balloons secured and indoors when possible.

If a balloon becomes tangled in electrical equipment, officials said residents should assume the line is live and avoid attempting to remove it. Instead, they should contact Ameren Illinois at 800-755-5000 to have crews respond safely.
