JACKSON, Mo., (KBSI) — Jackson VFW Post will host a memorial service and ribbon-cutting ceremony May 21 at the Veterans Memorial in Brookside Park.

The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will honor local veterans whose names are displayed at the memorial. Organizers said four additional veterans will be recognized this year with the placement of new memorial flags.

The ceremony will also celebrate the completion of a new lighting project installed by the City of Jackson. Officials said the lighting allows the memorial flags to remain illuminated overnight in accordance with the United States Flag Code.

City officials said the project cost between $20,000 and $30,000.

The ceremony will include a memorial service, placement of the new flags, the playing of Taps, recognition of those involved in the lighting project and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Following the event, attendees are invited to stay for hot dogs and drinks while touring the memorial. Veterans of the Vietnam War, Iraq War and Afghanistan War will also be available to answer questions about the memorial.

Organizers said the Brookside Park Veterans Memorial was established through the efforts of local veterans, volunteers and community supporters and continues to serve as a place of remembrance for those who served in the military.

The public is invited to attend.
