BBB offers tips for choosing an assisted living facility during Older Americans Month

ST. LOUIS (KBSI) — During Older Americans Month, the Better Business Bureau is encouraging older adults and their families to carefully research assisted living facilities before making a decision.

Older Americans Month highlights the contributions of older adults while encouraging them and their families to advocate for their health, independence and long-term care needs.

BBB said choosing an assisted living facility is an important decision that can affect a person’s clinical, financial and lifestyle needs. The organization recommends researching facilities through reviews, complaints and accreditation information available at BBB.org.

“Older adults and their families put a great deal of trust into their preferred assisted living facility,” said Michelle L. Corey, president and CEO of BBB St. Louis. “When your health and wellbeing is at stake, you want to be sure you’re making a well-researched decision and selecting the facility that’s best for you.”

BBB recommends starting by asking friends, family members and doctors for recommendations. Families are also encouraged to read online reviews and speak with current residents about their experiences.

The organization said people should consider the level of care offered, including whether facilities specialize in conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. BBB also recommends comparing costs, since Medicare does not cover room and board for assisted living, though some medical care may be covered.

Other recommendations include consulting a long-term care ombudsman, choosing a facility near family and friends, touring multiple locations and asking detailed questions about services, amenities, contracts and fees.

BBB also encourages families to closely review contracts before signing and pay attention to policies regarding payments, evictions and legal disputes.

More information and resources for older adults and their families are available through the Better Business Bureau.
