DESE announces retirement of Missouri education commissioner

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced that Missouri Commissioner of Education Karla Eslinger will retire effective June 1, 2026.
According to the department, Eslinger has served Missouri government and the state’s education system for more than 30 years, including the past two years as commissioner of education.
DESE said Eslinger recently led initiatives focused on strengthening data systems, improving communication and transparency with educators and families, and advancing a long-term strategic plan for Missouri’s education system.
The department thanked Eslinger for her years of service to Missouri students, educators and families.
