CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday for the city’s new Youth Outdoor Sports Complex at Shawnee Park.
The ceremony is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Shawnee Park Sports Complex, located at 1157 S. West End Blvd. Speakers will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the ribbon cutting.
The complex was funded through the Parks, Recreation and Storm Water Tax approved by voters in 2018.
The project includes five new youth softball and baseball fields with turf infields and a concession area. Turf infields were also added to the five original fields at the Shawnee Park Sports Complex.
City officials said construction on two football and soccer fields near College Street is expected to be completed this fall.
The facility will host recreational and travel softball and baseball leagues, tournaments and field rentals. The new complex officially opened in April.
