CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Southeast Missouri State University is celebrating Cape Girardeau’s recent recognition as one of the top small college towns in the country.

USA Today named Cape Girardeau the fifth-best small college town in America, citing the city’s blend of small-town hospitality, entertainment and community opportunities.

SEMO President Dr. Brad Hodson thanked local businesses, organizations and residents for helping create a welcoming environment for students.

“Thank you to the community, to each and every person, who make this town a home for the 9,000 students who come here every fall,” Hodson said.

Officials said Cape Girardeau’s historic downtown, Mississippi Riverfront, local restaurants and shops, parks, trails, arts scene and community events all contributed to the recognition.

Hodson said the honor reflects what many students, alumni and residents already know about the city.

“This recognition gives evidence to what Sue and I knew immediately when we moved here — this is a very special place,” Hodson said.

University leaders said SEMO will continue partnering with local businesses and organizations to support economic growth, workforce development and student experiences throughout the region.
