Carbondale Civic Center earns silver Bicycle Friendly Business award

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The League of American Bicyclists has recognized the Carbondale Civic Center/City Hall with a Silver Bicycle Friendly Business award.
The designation places the Carbondale Civic Center among more than 1,100 businesses and organizations nationwide recognized for supporting bicycling and promoting bike-friendly communities.
“During National Bike Month, we’re proud to recognize businesses that are helping to bicycling thrive in their communities,” League Executive Director Bill Nesper said in a statement. “From everyday encouragement to broader advocacy, Bicycle Friendly Businesses like the Carbondale Civic Center help build a culture where more people feel welcome to get rolling.”
City officials said the award reflects ongoing efforts to expand bicycle infrastructure and improve accessibility for cyclists throughout the community. Projects highlighted by the city include the Mudline Multiuse Bike Path, the Saluki Greenway and bike lane expansions along Wall Street.
Public Relations Officer Eva Fisher said the city also continues to promote cycling through community programs such as the Carbondale Bikes! group ride series.
The next Carbondale Bikes! group ride is scheduled for May 28, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Town Square Pavilion, 121 N. Illinois Ave. Riders will participate in a historic bike tour featuring local landmarks and bike routes throughout the city and campus area.
The Carbondale Civic Center provides bike parking racks and bicycle repair stations for employees and visitors. City officials also credited the city’s Complete Streets Committee for helping improve transportation planning for cyclists, pedestrians and other users.
The Bicycle Friendly Business program is part of the League of American Bicyclists’ broader Bicycle Friendly America initiative, which promotes safer and more accessible bicycling nationwide.
