RALEIGH, Ill. (KBSI) — Illinois State Police arrested a Raleigh man on first-degree murder charges following a fatal shooting that left a juvenile dead.

According to Illinois State Police, 41-year-old Justin D. Maloney of Raleigh was arrested after an investigation conducted by the agency’s Division of Criminal Investigation at the request of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said deputies responded shortly after 9 p.m. May 20 to a report of a residential burglary in progress on Chapel Road in Raleigh. When deputies arrived, they found a 16-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound. The juvenile was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Following the investigation, Maloney was taken into custody. On May 22, Illinois State Police special agents presented the case to the Illinois State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor’s Office, which approved three counts of first-degree murder charges against him.

Maloney remains lodged in the Saline County Jail pending his first court appearance.

Authorities said no additional information is being released at this time.

The charges are not evidence of guilt, and Maloney is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
