CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Families got a firsthand look at history in Cape Girardeau as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of Memorial Day.

This Memorial Day history is coming to life at Fort D as re-enactors take visitors back in time.

Andrew Porter is one of the volunteers at Fort D, him and others spent the day giving community members a firsthand look at what life was like during World War II.

It was here originally to protect the fort against confederate guerrillas during the civil war and it was built in 1861” says Porter.

He explains the importance behind the event.

“It’s important mainly here as a way to keep local history alive. Since this fort has a lot to do with the city of Cape” says Porter.

The re-enactment ran from 9 am to 3 pm on Memorial Day 2026.
