Midwest farm and orchard gets spotlight

ALTO PASS, Ill. (KBSI) – A local orchard will debut on the tv show Farms of America.
Rendeleman Orchards has been a staple in Southern Illinois for over a century evolving into the large farm it is now. Bringing home grown produce, honey, flowers and more to those both near and far.
Fifth generation family member and Rendelman Orchards Vice President Michelle Sirlesshares what the magic is behind keeping a farm going for more than 150 years.
“Only about 1% of any small family business makes it to the fifth generation so it is very unique and especially in farming where you’re relying heavily on the weather and market prices that you may not have any control over those two things. So, you definitely have to be, innovative and you have to be willing to try new things” says Sirles.
Rendelman Orchards is located in Southern Illinois near the Shawnee National Forest and offers many varieties of seasonal peaches, nectarines, pumpkins-when in season, flower fields, bird and flower habitat, fresh honey, an overnight cottage. Rendleman Orchards began in 1873 with 88 acres and has grown significantly over the years passed down through 5 generations.
A market full of local produce, meat and other items is also available to visitors. Sirles shares that each generation has seen its own obstacles including the current generation and persevering and working together has carried them through.
“Over the generations, you know, we’ve had very significant recessions since then, including now and we also faced two pandemics during the time of our operation and so, you know, that was definitely challenging for us as well, to have so many people here at the farm and how we’re going to deal with that and how we’re going to keep all 80 of our team members safe and keep the business going” says Sirles.
Sirles shares the orchard opened up this week to the public and in celebration of America’s 250th birthday American themed photo Opps and decorations can be seen around the farm and so much more!
“In 10 days, we’ll be harvesting peaches and at that time, we’ll have our fresh peach smoothie” says Sirles. “Right now, people can come out and see some of the new items we have in the store, some of the photo ops visit the chicken coop and also our apiary and get some of our first apple blossom honey made right here on the farm.”
Rendelman Orchards will be featured on season 2 of Farms of America on Monday June 8, 2026.
