MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky., (KBSI) — Heath Elementary School Resource Officer Will Gilbert has been named the Region 1 School Resource Officer of the Year.

Gilbert received the award June 9 in recognition of his service, dedication and impact on students and staff at Heath Elementary School, according to McCracken County Public Schools.

School officials said Gilbert has become a trusted mentor and positive presence on campus through his daily interactions with students.

McCracken County Police Chief Wes Orazine, who nominated Gilbert for the award, praised his commitment to supporting students both inside and outside the classroom.

Gilbert is known for organizing student engagement activities, celebrating birthdays, participating in school fundraisers and creating opportunities to encourage positive behavior among students. One of his most popular traditions is a weekly dance challenge in which students vote on a dance for Gilbert to perform if they meet behavior goals throughout the week.

School officials said Gilbert’s efforts often extend beyond his official duties, with his family also helping support student activities and mentorship opportunities.

“Officer Gilbert exemplifies what it means to serve students with both professionalism and heart,” Superintendent Josh Hunt said in a statement.

McCracken County Public Schools congratulated Gilbert on the honor and thanked him for his dedication to the students, staff and families of Heath Elementary School.
