Carbondale man arrested on firearm, trespassing charges

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — A Carbondale man was arrested Wednesday after police responded to a report of a trespasser who was believed to be armed with a handgun, according to the Carbondale Police Department.

Officers were dispatched at approximately 12:12 p.m. June 17 to the 300 block of South Cedarview Street for a reported trespass in progress.

Police said officers quickly located the suspect, identified as Quearii D. Mathis-Jones, 24, of Carbondale, and found him in possession of a firearm.

Mathis-Jones was arrested and charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm, criminal trespass to real property and possession of a concealed firearm without a Firearm Owner’s Identification card.

He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail pending a detention hearing.

According to police, the incident stemmed from an ongoing personal dispute between acquaintances.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
