CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — River City Swim Academy will join swimmers around the world this week in the World’s Largest Swim Lesson, an international event focused on promoting water safety and drowning prevention.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, June 25, at Cape Splash Waterpark. Organizers hope to attract more than 300 participants.

Founded in 2010 by the World Waterpark Association, the World’s Largest Swim Lesson brings together swimmers worldwide to promote the message that swimming lessons can help save lives.

According to organizers, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States.

River City Swim Academy owner Bobby Brewer, a former USA National Champion and U.S. Open Champion, said formal swim lessons can significantly reduce the risk of drowning and provide additional developmental benefits for children.

The event will be held in partnership with River City Aquatics, the City of Cape Girardeau and SafeSlide, a company specializing in water slide restoration and coatings.

June 25 has also been designated as River City Swim Academy and River City Aquatics Day in Cape Girardeau. Participating Jimmy John’s locations in the city will donate a portion of sales to support the swim academy’s programs.

This marks the second time River City Swim Academy has participated in the global event.

River City Swim Academy is located at 1620 College St. in Cape Girardeau and offers swim instruction for participants ranging from infants to adults.
