Two identified after deadly tornado strikes Jefferson County

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. — Two people were killed after a tornado moved through Jefferson County on Sunday evening, causing extensive damage to homes and other structures, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Jeff Bullard confirmed Monday that a second victim had died as a result of the storm.

The victims were identified as 83-year-old Delores B. Shelton of Mount Vernon and 62-year-old Sarita L. Kimble of Mount Vernon.

The tornado destroyed at least three homes and damaged numerous other structures in the areas of North Tolle Lane, North Village Lane, North Stratford Lane and North Ranch Lane.

Volunteer organizations are working alongside local and state officials to assist with cleanup and recovery efforts in the affected areas.

Authorities said there were no additional reports of tornado activity in Jefferson County after 9 p.m. Sunday.

“The sheriff and his staff send their condolences to the family and friends of Delores Shelton and Sarita Kimble,” the sheriff’s office said in an update.

Damage assessments and recovery efforts remain ongoing.
