CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Firefighters rescued an unconscious resident from an apartment fire early Monday morning in Carbondale.

The Carbondale Fire Department responded at approximately 4:15 a.m. June 22 to an automatic fire alarm in the 2000 block of South Illinois Avenue.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke throughout the building and an active fire inside one apartment unit. Firefighters located an unconscious occupant inside the apartment and removed the individual from the residence before providing emergency medical care.

The patient was transported by Jackson County Ambulance Service to Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the apartment where it originated, preventing the fire from spreading to neighboring units. No other residents were displaced.

Officials said the fire remains under investigation but is being treated as accidental.

The Carbondale Fire Department credited the building’s fire alarm system with alerting residents and notifying emergency responders. Fire officials are reminding residents to ensure working smoke detectors are installed in sleeping areas and on every level of their homes.
