DU QUOIN, Ill., (KBSI) — The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will host a free fishing day for children on Tuesday, July 7.

The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the fairgrounds and is designed to introduce young anglers to the basics of fishing while encouraging families to spend time outdoors.

Fishing poles, bait and basic instruction will be provided by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Participants younger than 16 do not need a fishing license, while anyone 16 or older must have a valid Illinois fishing license.

Advance registration is required, and participation is limited to the first 25 children who sign up.

Participants should meet in front of Expo Hall at 9 a.m. on the day of the event. Organizers recommend bringing sunscreen, insect repellent, water and a chair.

Parents are encouraged to attend and assist younger children. Older children may participate without parental supervision.

“Fishing is a great sport that exposes kids to nature while teaching them the importance of patience and persistence,” Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II said in a statement.

To register or for more information, call the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds office at 618-542-1511. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
