Scott County Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scam targeting residents

SCOTT COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Scott County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scam phone calls from people impersonating deputies and requesting money.
The sheriff’s office said it has recently received reports from members of the public who have been contacted by callers asking for money. Officials said the calls are similar to a scam first reported in May, in which scammers claimed a loved one was being held in the Scott County Jail and needed bond money.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that law enforcement officers will never call and ask for money under any circumstances.
Residents who receive a suspicious call are urged not to send money or provide personal information. Instead, officials recommend hanging up and contacting the Scott County Sheriff’s Office to verify the information and report the scam.
