MARION, Ill. (KBSI) — The Salvation Army of Southern Illinois is kicking off its annual Christmas in July campaign with volunteer opportunities, fundraising events and a school supply drive to support local families in need.

The campaign begins Saturday, July 11, with a Christmas in July Bell Ringing Campaign from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Marion Walmart and Kroger. Donations collected during the event will stay in Southern Illinois to help provide food, rent and utility assistance, and other emergency services.

According to The Salvation Army, more than 20,000 people, including over 5,000 children, received assistance through its Southern Illinois programs last year.

The organization is also partnering with The Bank of Herrin, SouthernTrust Bank and Banterra Bank for the Battle of the Banks Christmas in July Challenge. Customers can donate spare change, cash or checks at participating branches throughout the campaign.

A Stuff the Bus school supply drive is scheduled for Friday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Marion Walmart. School supplies collected during the event will be distributed to local students in partnership with Whiteash Freewill Baptist Church.

The Salvation Army said financial donations also help support food assistance, emergency financial aid, disaster relief and other services for families across Southern Illinois. Volunteers are still needed for the bell-ringing campaign.
