CHICAGO (KBSI) — Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs has awarded $195,000 in grants to 10 nonprofit organizations across the state that provide food and housing assistance to people in need.

The grants, distributed through the Charitable Trust Stabilization Fund, will support organizations serving communities in Aledo, Aurora, Chicago, Danville, Elgin, Galesburg, Herrin, Peru and Pittsfield.

“Through these grants, we are lending a hand to people who are struggling to meet basic needs like food and shelter,” Frerichs said in a statement.

Each of the selected organizations received up to $20,000 to support programs addressing food insecurity and housing needs. The recipients include:

  • Mercer County Better Together in Aledo — $20,000
  • Rebuilding Together Aurora — $20,000
  • A Little Bit of Heaven in Chicago — $20,000
  • Care for Friends in Chicago — $20,000
  • United Way of Danville Area — $20,000
  • PADS of Elgin — $20,000
  • VNA Community Services in Galesburg — $20,000
  • Herrin House of Hope — $20,000
  • Habitat for Humanity of LaSalle-Bureau-Putnam Counties in Peru — $20,000

The grants are funded through fees paid by nonprofit corporations when filing annual reports with the Illinois Secretary of State and do not use personal or property tax dollars.

Since its creation in 2017, the Charitable Trust Stabilization Fund has awarded more than $5.2 million through 261 grants to 209 nonprofit organizations across Illinois.

The next application period for the Charitable Trust Stabilization Fund runs through Sept. 30 for nonprofits providing food and housing assistance.

Treasurer Frerichs also announced a new Charitable Trust Hunger Relief Grant program, which offers grants of up to $5,000 to smaller volunteer-run organizations fighting hunger. Applications for that program are being accepted through July 31.
