POPLAR BLUFF, Mo., (KBSI) — A Poplar Bluff resident captured video of a black bear wandering through his backyard Monday, offering a rare glimpse of Missouri wildlife in a residential neighborhood.
R.W. Harty, streamed the encounter live on Facebook, showing the bear sitting near a tree in his yard before eventually moving on.
The Missouri Department of Conservation says black bear sightings become more common during the summer months as bears travel in search of food and mates. While encounters are uncommon, bears are known to roam through neighborhoods, particularly in southern Missouri.
Officials advise residents who spot a bear to keep their distance, avoid approaching or feeding the animal, and secure garbage, pet food and other potential food sources.
