Carbondale announces filing period for 2027 city election

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale has announced key dates for candidates planning to run in the April 6, 2027, municipal election.
Voters will elect one mayor and three city council members to four-year terms. The election will determine who fills the seats currently held by Mayor Carolin Harvey and council members Clare Killman, Adam Loos and Nancy Maxwell.
Candidate petition packets and informational materials will be available beginning July 28 in the City Clerk’s Office at Carbondale City Hall. The 2027 Candidate’s Guide is also available through the Illinois State Board of Elections.
Completed nomination papers may be filed with the City Clerk’s Office from Monday, Oct. 19, through Monday, Oct. 26, 2026.
If five or more candidates file for mayor or 13 or more candidates file for the three council seats, a consolidated primary election will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2027.
The consolidated election is scheduled for April 6, 2027, with those elected taking office at the first City Council meeting in May.
City officials encourage prospective candidates to review the Illinois State Board of Elections’ Candidate’s Guide and seek legal counsel regarding eligibility and petition requirements before filing.
